– 10 QUESTIONS WE ASK EVERYBODY –

Metal Divas: Please tell us what got you into music and describe your early days and the journey this far to be guitarist:
Helena: Things started back when I was about 10-11 years old and I felt the need to listen to some music (till that age I hardly listened to any music). I started trying listening to some pop-styled songs that were pretty popular at that period, but they really seemed meaningful to me. One of my older brothers was a fan of classic rock music and I remember myself sitting in the room next door observing what he was listening to. Yellow raven – Scorpions and Stargazer – Rainbow were some of the songs that were enough to prove to me that this was the right route to follow. After a few years listening and shifting through some more bands, I finally came along to a Scorpions DVD called “Humanity”. Immediately I realized that music was what I wanted to do. After begging my parents to get me started on guitar lessons, finally at the age of 14 I got my first Electric Guitar. Till now, the guitar and music in general, is my first priority.

Metal Divas: In your opinion what is the essence of music in general:
Helena: Expressing your feelings and having music as a good partner through every stage of your life.

Metal Divas: Describe any “before the show” ritual:
Helena: Nothing very special until now, just having a drink in the backstage, doing my warm up and saying my prayers!

Metal Divas: What is your most memorable moment of your career:
Helena:
Every step you are making forward is something that you’ll remember, ’cause it takes many things to do every step. I think the most memorable was the show we gave two monts ago in Athens alongside Diary of Dreams. Everything was how it should be. The crowd, the atmosphere, the sound, everything was amazing.

Metal Divas: What is a rule — whether it’s a law, societal standard, or moral code that exists that you think should be broken:
Helena: Something that’s specific to my country, the government expects you to work your ass off and get by with a salary that puts you immediately below the poverty line.

Metal Divas: Name 5 things you can’t live without:
Helena: 1. Guitar
2. Music
3. Family
4. Friends
5. Good food

Metal Divas: Share any funny story while on the road or any crazy request received from a fan:
Helena: When you’re on the road, cause of the enthusiasm and energy, there are a lot of funny moments. I think, one of the funniest was when we had two concerts in raw but in different cities that they were far one from the other. There was a fan we met on the first concert and the next day he was at the venue of the 2nd concert even before our soundcheck and when we saw him, he just said ”Hi, it’s me again”, he asked for a t-shirt and then he just disappeared. We still don’t know who he was!

Metal Divas: What do you do to keep your skills in good shape:
Helena: I always keep doing exercises for my fingers, always from low bpm to high bpm, even in days when there aren’t many hours available to practice, I just do my usual exercises.

Metal Divas: Please give any advice to young aspiring guitar players who wanna enter the music industry:
Helena: Keep your eyes always open, don’t ever hesitate, cause nobody knows better than you what you have in mind, work hard and don’t take anything for granted. Keep in mind what experienced people tell you, but don’t let that stop you from trying things yourself.

Metal Divas: Ten years from now you will be…:
Helena: A rockstar!

– 5 RANDOM QUESTIONS WE ASKED HELENA –

Metal Divas: What makes you bored?
Helena: Sleepy and coward people

Metal Divas: Can you blow bubbles with bubblegum?
Helena:
For sure!

Metal Divas: Why aren’t blueberries blue?
Helena: They aren’t???

Metal Divas: Do you have any secret family recipes?
Helena: Of course, but they won’t be secret anymore if I write them here, will they?

Metal Divas: What if Batman gets bitten by a vampire?
Helena: I guess he’s screwed. I mean the vampire.

– 10 QUESTIONS WE ASK EVERYBODY –

Metal Divas: Please tell us what got you into music and describe your early days and journey thus far to be a vocalist.
Kobra: When I was 8 years old I began classical training falling into the likes of Beethoven, Bach, and Vivaldi. When I was 15, the tides changed. I went to a Judas Priest concert, heard Painkiller, and was forever in love with the music and culture that came with it.

Metal Divas: In your opinion, what is the essence of music in general?
Kobra: Music is there to evoke thoughts and emotions and strengthen us. Whether it is toward a place of happiness, inspiration, anger, sadness, or reminiscence, it opens and guides us to a place of feeling; a bigger “inner” place, than we were in before hearing it. Music is the sound of our life and aspirations.

Metal Divas: Describe any “before the show” rituals you might have.
Kobra: I pace back and forth while chanting a monotone, private prayer I learned while in India.

Metal Divas: What is the most memorable moment of your career so far?
Kobra: Every part of this career has been memorable because it has taken so much hard work to achieve even one baby step forward. One of my most favorite moments was the first time we saw people singing our music right along with us at a show. It was the first time I really realized people were paying attention.

kobra2Metal Divas: What is a rule — whether it’s a law, societal standard, or moral code that exists that you think should be broken?
Kobra: People should marry or be together for love.

Metal Divas: Name five things you can’t live without:
Kobra: 1 – My family

Metal Divas: Share any funny story while on the road or any crazy request received from a fan.
Kobra: When we were in Europe last fall, my leather pants ripped open 2 mins before set time. I tried to safety pin the crotch back together but all the pins opened and scratched my legs as soon as I ran on stage. Not only were the first three rows staring at my underwear with their mouths open, I was in a lot of pain!

Metal Divas: What do you do to keep your voice in good shape?
Kobra: Lots of rest, water, a healthy diet, and intense cardiovascular exercise. The healthier your heart is and more oxygen your lungs can hold, the better your live performance can be. You can move more without compromising the quality of the notes.

Metal Divas: Please give any advice to young aspiring vocalists who wanna enter the music industry.
Kobra: The best thing you can do for yourself is not hold back and give it a shot. Jump right in and go for it. Seek mentorship from wherever you can. Learn by having real experiences and doing the work. Look up to the people that have done what you aspire to do and realize that they were aspiring people just like you. Know it is possible. I would also recommend taking some vocal lessons to learn proper techniques surrounding breath support and vocal protection. It’s scary when your instrument is in your body and you only get one! We have to fight for what we love or there is no meaning to life itself.

Metal Divas: Ten years from now you will be…
Kobra: Still rocking out but doing our own headlining tours! We will also have 5 more albums out by then!

– 5 RANDOM QUESTIONS WE ASKED KOBRA –

Metal Divas: Do you parallel park or drive around the block?
Kobra: Parallel Park

Metal Divas: Which shoe do you put on first?
Kobra: Right foot

Metal Divas: What’s the strangest talent you have?
Kobra: I’m not too shabby at Reggaeton!

Metal Divas: Which vegetable do you hate?
Kobra: Celery

Metal Divas: What question should you never ask a woman?
Kobra: Anything regarding her body especially how much she weighs!

Current plans: To finish up the European festivals and tour dates with Cradle of Filth.

– 10 QUESTIONS WE ASK EVERYBODY –

Metal Divas: Please tell us what got you into music and describe your early days and journey thus far to be a vocalist.
Lindsay: Music was a big part of my life from a very young age. My father taught me guitar at the age of 7 and I was always singing since I was a small child. Over the years I have progressed from Country, Rock, Classical, Folk, to Musical Theatre styles of singing. In high school I formed my own all girl punk band where I started to perform on stage and write my own music. In my early 20s I progressed to rock music and then eventually into Metal. I do however write my own symphonic music as a solo artist. I’m always open to new styles as a vocalist, but mainly have stuck to classical opera studies the past few years. I always knew I wanted to be a singer, a lead singer too. I had no idea I would find pleasure in writing my own music and lyrics. I think that is the most gratifying part of being a singer: singing your own story in your own expression. Nothing is more fulfilling as an artist. Such singers as Amy Lee, Tarja Turunen, Simone Simmons, Sharon Den Adel, and Sarah McLachlan have inspired me to work harder and become better. I never in all my life thought I would come to be part of the live line up for British extreme heavy metal band Cradle of Filth, but in January 2013 I signed on and gained all the experience and confidence I’ve ever needed.

Metal Divas: In your opinion, what is the essence of music in general?
Lindsay:
Love and passion, expression and healing. In my case its life, the air I breathe, the reason I get out of bed in the morning.

Metal Divas: Describe any “before the show” rituals you might have.
Lindsay:
Well, of course there is always getting dolled up and dressed for the stage. But at least 10 minutes of vocal warm ups that cover my entire range. There are 2-3 minutes in head voice, then chest voice, and then finding a comfortable way to connect the two. Then, of course, lots of funny cartoon character voices and jumping around. After a short self-talk with mental focusing methods, and then I’m off to the stage!

Metal Divas:  What is the most memorable moment of your career so far?
Lindsay:
I would have to say Cradle of Filth’s last show on the world tour on May 12th, 2013 in Fremantle, Australia. We all knew the set through and through. We were really comfortable with each other on stage and put on a stellar performance that I will never forget.

Metal Divas:  What is a rule, whether it’s a law, societal standard, or moral code that exists that you think should be broken?
Lindsay:
Humanity thinking they have the right to over throw animals and the environment. Allowances such as factory farming, animal testing, and forest demolishing are just outright disgusting and wrong.

Metal Divas: Name five things you can’t live without:
Lindsay:
1 – My Harp
2 – The ability to write music
3 – My hearing
4 – A good long walk in the forest
5 – My Van (to escape everything)

img_7011Metal Divas: Share any funny story while on the road or any crazy request received from a fan.
Lindsay:
In Fremantle, Australia a fan asked me to sign his arm tattoo of Cradle of Filth album artwork. He later got my signature tattooed on his arm. I was so flattered and still am!

Metal Divas: What do you do to keep your voice in good shape?
Lindsay:
Mostly by supportive talking and making sure I’m not too loud in my speech. I usually tend to want to speak loud out of excitement, so it takes a lot of control and focus to calm down. Lots of sleep, eating well (and vegan), taking my vitamins, vocal warm downs at night, always warming up before a show, rehearsal, or practice, and making sure I am always trying new styles and techniques within my comfort ranges before I try to expand my range.

Metal Divas:  Please give any advice to young aspiring vocalists who want to enter the music industry.
Lindsay: Practice, practice, practice. Be open to positive criticism to better yourself. The best experience in better knowing yourself as a performer and your own voice is to be up on stage, so get up there as much as possible. And be open to trying out new styles of singing in your own interpretations. As for the business end of things: you need a tough skin and don’t let setbacks or ignorant statements upset you. Have a plan and stick to it. Know your vision and focus on it fully. And if someone is just not worth working with out of stress or damaging your name by association then drop them as soon as possible.

Metal Divas: Ten years from now you will be…
Lindsay: I would like to tour the world fronting a full orchestra with my own solo music and various guest vocalist as part of the act. But I could also be fronting a metal band, still playing with Cradle of Filth, writing film scores, and/or teaching music. I know I will always be teaching a select few students. I really enjoy it.

– 5 RANDOM QUESTIONS WE ASKED LINDSAY –

Metal Divas: Grab the book nearest to you, turn to page 38 and find line 4. What does it say?
Lindsay: Sadly I don’t have any books near me except for my passport and it only goes up to page 26!

Metal Divas: Do you really know all the words to your national anthem?

Lindsay: Bjork or Shagrath from Dimmu Borgir.
